The official language of Vietnam, Vietnamese was also known as Annamese during the French colonisation of Vietnam. The Vietnamese language uses an adaptation of the Latin alphabet called Quốc Ngữ. Vietnamese was previously written in the Chinese script and still retains its heavy influence from Chinese.

Vietnamese is the mother tongue of approximately 86% of the people living in Vietnam and a second language to the ethnic minorities in the country. Vietnamese is also spoken by large Diasporas who reside primarily in the United States of America, Australia, Canada, Cambodia and France.
