Spanish

Spanish or otherwise known as Castilian originated in northern Spain in the Kingdom of Castile. Although Spanish originated in Spain the vast majority of Spanish speakers live in Latin America where Spanish was introduced with the conquistadors during the expansion of the Spanish empire. The Spanish empire also extended the use of the Spanish language to areas in Africa and the United States of America where significant proportions of the population speak Spanish.

The Spanish alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet with a few additional characters ñ (eñe), ch (che) and ll (elle). Spanish is a phonetic language.
