Traditional and Simplified Chinese refer to the written forms of Chinese. Mandarin and Cantonese refer to the main spoken dialects of the Chinese language.
Traditional and Simplified Chinese are the two standard sets of Chinese characters for the contemporary Chinese language. The use of each script depends on location.
Traditional Chinese characters (standard characters or orthodox characters) have remained relatively the same since the 5th century and are currently used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. They were also used in mainland China before the introduction of Simplified characters by the Chinese government.
Simplified Chinese was promoted by the Government of the Peoples Republic of China during the 1950’s and 1960’s in an effort to eradicate illiteracy. Simplified Chinese Characters are, as suggested, a simplified adaptation of Traditional Chinese Characters, in general requiring less strokes to form the character. Changes have also been both graphical and phonetic and Cursive Chinese has influenced the development of the Simplified Chinese script. Today Simplified Chinese is used in the Peoples Republic of China, Singapore and Malaysia.
Traditional Chinese is used more often by Chinese populations living outside of Chinese speaking countries, however the use of Simplified Chinese in these populations is increasing due to the migration of people from the Peoples Republic of China.
